Compile Functionalities
Collaborated with development team to create a list of required functionalities
Knowpia is a multilingual platform enabling global internet users to contribute and share knowledge. Knowpia’s website leverages the work of Wikipedia and adds the ability for members to create blogs, discussions, and Q&A threads.
Solo UI/UX designer
Lead design efforts to create a new, user friendly mobile application using Knowpia’s current website as inspiration.
The Process
Wireframe
Created low fidelity wireframes to showcase multiple design concepts
Iterate
Designs went through multiple rounds of iteration before getting approval
Prototype
Wireframes were turned into high fidelity mocks to stitch together a prototype
Compile Functionalities
Collaborated with the development team in China to create a list of required functionalities based on the current Knowpia website to ensure a consistent user experience.
Wireframe
Wireframes were created to test various design concepts while implementing required functionalities.
Iterate
The design concepts went through 8 rounds of iteration before being approved to be turned into high fidelity mocks.
prototype
Wireframes were then turned into high fidelity mocks which were used to build a final prototype showcasing the end-to-end user flow.
The Application’s Purpose
The application was to be split into three sections: Knowpia, Knowmedia, and Knowpedia with each section providing a unique user experience. Knowpedia, for example, would allow users to browse through Wikipedia articles. The overall experience would allow the user to complete various tasks all through one application.
Example Functionalities:
Create blog posts
Search through your followers’ content
Have the ability to interact with content (i.e. like and comment)
Sync multiple social media accounts
Post on various social media accounts simultaneously
A Collaborative Approach
Throughout the ideation and wireframing process, both the executive and development teams were involved in pitching new ideas. This ensured that the business and engineering perspectives were taken into consideration while creating new concepts.
Navigation Iteration
Navigating between the three sections of the application deemed to be a challenge for our team. Taking inspiration from Pinterest, I proposed that our navigation should mimic how users save pins to their boards on Pinterest’s mobile application. After a few iterations on the proposed idea, we were able to come up with a great way to navigate.
The Final Product
The final designs conveyed an easy-to-use, modern aesthetic which contrasted from the outdated website the company had at the time. The look of the application kickstarted Knowpia’s shift to a more updated, sophisticated user interface for their online presence.
